Drinking That Gin and Juice

A few years ago gin and I suffered a bad break up.  After a pretty epic night at a friends cabin drinking G & T’s on a hot summer night, I woke up the next morning to the realization that gin and I no longer got along.  Gin made me feel like crap.  Gin made me hate myself.  The very thought of gin made me want to puke.  That morning I decided to kick gin out of my life because I never wanted to feel that pain again.

Well, after a somewhat lengthy gin-abbatical I recently rekindled my love affair with this heady little libation.

One of the reasons I came back to gin is that I started drinking good gin.  Much like any relationship the quality of your partner is key.  At first it was Hendrick’s Gin that made me believe that I could love again.  Recently the gins of Vikre Distillery have sent me into that long term commitment, I think this going to work, so happy together phase.

Vikre Distillery is a small artisan distillery in Duluth, MN that produces 3 different types of gin.  Traditional Juniper, Cedar and Spruce.  All 3 are stellar but today I am going to talk about the Cedar.

The Cedar Boreal Gin is infused with the smoky aroma of cedar wood, citrusy wild sumac, and a traces of black currant.  It is the citrus note that I really keyed on and was what lead to my creation of  “Straight out of the 218 Gin and Juice.”

In addition to the Boreal Cedar Gin I combine La Croix Pample-Mousse Sparkling Water and fresh grapefruit juice to make this cocky.

The benefits of grapefruits range from heart health to weight loss and cancer prevention.

The powerful combination of fiber, potassium, lycopene, vitamin C and choline in grapefruits all help to maintain a healthy heart.

As a source of vitamin C,  as well as other antioxidants, grapefruits can help combat the formation of free radicals that can cause cancer.  Foods high in vitamin C and beta-carotene have been shown to lower the risk of esophageal cancer.

Fresh grapefruit juice creates an alkaline reaction after digestion.  And the juice extracted from the grapefruit is beneficial in preventing acid formation and many other diseases that arise due to the presence of excess acidity in the body.

With a nod to Snoop Dog I bring you my version of Gin and Juice.  The splash of the grapefruit flavored La Croix Pample-Mousse cuts the juice therefore cutting the overall (natural) sugar and calorie content.  And, as usual, I don’t give exact measurements.  Make this drink your own way depending on whether or not you like more juice, water or gin.

Props to Snoop.  And while  I may not agree with the “smokin’ endo” part but I do love me my Gin and Juice.
