I remember my first introduction to tequila. It was at the bar my parents owned and even though I wasn’t old enough to drink I remember the cool thing for our customers to do was to get the last shot out of a tequila bottle so you could eat the worm at the bottom of the bottle. I remember watching them do this as a kid and thinking that was stupid. Today, as a grown ass woman, I find it disgusting. Not because of the worm eating but because I now know that what our customers were drinking wasn’t even really tequila.
True tequila is made from the blue agave plant. Low-end tequila, or “crap tequila” as I call it, is distilled from a mixture using other sugars. Crap ass, no good, sugars. And that is what most rail tequilas are made of.
When looking for a tequila make sure it is a high end one with a label that says “100% Agave”. Tequilas (true tequilas) made with 100% Agave have less bite than the low-end stuff.
And because I truly write this blog for my health I should have you know that there are some benefits to choosing tequila as your drink of choice.
Tequila contains agavins, which are a particular kind of sugar in tequila. Agavins have a less refined molecular structure which doesn’t raise the blood sugar levels. As a result, many of the calories pass through the system unused as opposed to other alcohol sugars, which are not so glycemic index friendly. But just to drum this into you this is ONLY if you drink the stuff labeled “100% agave” to get this benefit. Cheaper brands will be filled out with other sugar alcohols, and we all know that sugar is the devil. And the devil takes many forms.
I drink my tequila on the rocks with a splash of club soda and squirt of lime. I also enjoy tequila in the classic Margarita style. I do not buy premade Margarita mix because as you can guess they contain all kinds of horrible things including sugar so when I have the time and the means I like to make my Margaritas from scratch. But when I am on a beach or on a boat here is the easiest, and quite honestly, one of the best Margarita recipes you will ever have.
The key here is no only to use top shelf 100% pure agave tequila but to seek out Arizona Limeade made by certified organic Patagonia Orchards. The Arizona Limeade is made with a few simple ingredients including purified water, lime juice and stevia. It is virtually calorie and sugar free!! Arizona Limeade can be found in most Whole Foods.
The Arizona Limeade has been such a discovery I plan to start ordering it by the case.
Yup. By the case.
What can I say? I like my Margaritas. And lime prevents scurvy.
